Fillings
What is a filling?
Bacteria on teeth release acid which dissolve the tooth causing tooth decay. The bacteria and the decay must be removed. A filling is used to replace the missing portion.
What types of fillings are there?
There are two types of fillings: 1)silver ("metal", "amalgam") fillings and 2)white ("tooth colored", "composite" or "metal free") fillings.

Silver Fillings
Silver fillings are a mixture of mercury, silver and trace elements. The filling material is placed in the tooth and allowed to harden. The filling is mechanically locked into the tooth, like a cork in a bottle. For strength, the filling has to have a certain thickness or bulk. For small or shallow cavities, white fillings are recommend.
Many people have voiced concern over mercury in silver fillings. However, according to the American Dental Association (ADA) and scientific studies, silver fillings are safe and durable. Click to see the ADA's complete statement on silver fillings.
White Fillings
White fillings are a mixture of polymers and resins. The white filling bonds or glues to the tooth. Because a white filling can bond to the tooth, less tooth needs to be removed when preparing the tooth. White fillings are also used on front teeth to change their color or appearance ("bonding", "cosmetic dentistry"). For teeth that are sensitive to hot and cold because of gum recession, white fillings can also be used to help reduce sensitivity.
