Denture/Partial

What is a denture?

Dentures ("full", "complete" dentures)  are used when a person is missing all their teeth in either the upper or lower jaw. Replacement teeth are set in a plastic base. The dentures sit on top of the patient's gums.

Over time, the gums and bone under the denture shrinks and changes shape. Well fitting dentures should not be loose or cause sore spots. Dentures should be periodically relined/adjusted to ensure a good fit. Really old dentures or those with worn down teeth should be remade.

What is a partial?

A partial ("partial" denture) can be used when a person is missing some teeth. The partial is a removable metal framework with clasps that attach to the adjacent teeth. Replacement teeth and plastic gums are also on the framework. Sometimes the metal clasps are visible depending on which teeth are missing or how wide the patient smiles. Other possible alternatives to replace missing teeth are implants or bridges.
